It is the model year: A = 2010 … N = 2022, P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026, V = 2027. Cars built late in the previous year can already carry the next code, and Shanghai / Berlin cars reportedly use the calendar build year.
Look at the 11th character: F = Fremont, A = Austin (Gigafactory Texas), C = Shanghai, B = Berlin-Brandenburg, N = Nevada. The first three characters (WMI) are not a reliable indicator of the plant.
Each character is turned into a number, multiplied by a positional weight (8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 10, 0, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2), everything is added up and divided by 11. The remainder is the 9th character (10 is written as X). Open “How the check digit is calculated” in any result to see the maths step by step.
Not necessarily. The check digit is only mandatory in North America, so cars built in Shanghai or Berlin sometimes do not match. More often it is a typo – TeslaVin suggests the most likely corrections.
Only partly. Position 8 shows the number of motors and a Performance flag, and position 7 the battery chemistry, but Tesla does not encode retail trim names or exact battery capacity in the VIN.
No. TeslaVin is an independent project and is not affiliated with Tesla, Inc. Decoding follows public VIN standards and community-documented Tesla codes, cross-checked with NHTSA data. Always verify important purchase decisions with Tesla or an authorised service centre.
